About us

Background

With almost four decades of war and ethnic conflicts severely affected all sectors in Afghanistan. 

A permanent break with its troubled past, yet there are many issues, which are beyond the capacity of communities to control. To fill the gap and reward the prosperity to the community, a group of young and professional entrepreneurs established NAO in year 2021 which is intended to create the highest level of positive impact on society by providing educational, agricultural and income generation support interventions in Afghanistan by using sound, sustainable and responsive community-based approaches.

Most likely the common critical questions that we will ever have to answer is; why you established NAO or in another word what do you hope to achieve?

 

Afghanistan is land lock country affected by the war for four decades which limited the accessibility of community including but limited to the education, health, agriculture, social protection and infrastructure, therefore, group of professionals have identified a need in the community and establishes the organization not only to address the need but rather to address it and assist in resolving those issues and be part of the solutions to the problem.

 

NAO will provide opportunities to those who are in need for assistance of commodities and put together volunteers who are willing to offer time and expertise not only to be part of the assistance to the community but also to build their capacity in the following areas.

EDUCATION

No country and no one can achieve sustainable economic development without education and substantial investment in human capital. Education enriches people’s understandings of themselves and therefore, access to education can improve the economic outcomes and determine the prospects of future generations at all especially in poor and war affected countries. It increases the propensity for better employment opportunities and boosts
economic growth and increases the self-dependency of the country.

AGRICULTURE

Agricultural sectors plays a strategic role within economic development of a poor and war affected country. Increase in agricultural production leads to an increased demand in industrial sectors and gradually dissolves the food poverty and leads to a sustainable country. Further, increase in agriculture is one of the most powerful method to end extreme poverty. Agriculture is one of the main sources of the employments livelihood and income for significant percentage of the population. It plays essential role within the economy of the country and globally.

Social Protection

History

New Afghanistan Organization (NAO) is a non-governmental organization and is a non-political, not-for-profit, and impartial organization with no bias towards a particular religion, ethnicity, or political belief. It is registered with Ministry of Economy (MoEc) and has its own independent legal status and entity. NAO’s key working sectors are: 1) Education; civic education and awareness initiatives, 2) Agriculture; irrigation, fumigation, planting, animal husbandry ,and 3) Social protection in terms of capacity building in social, human and legal rights skills for life, skills for employment, and income generation opportunities.

NAO is one of the functioning and sustainable organizations that provides quality services to the community in Afghanistan. It has qualified staff, well-developed systems, effective leadership, equipped with the qualified human resource, information, tools and equipment and are able to implement projects in 34 provinces of Afghanistan and proudly saying that the expert and professional team has proved that NAO is one of the successful organizations in the community and can lead its activities successfully throughout the country.

In the years since, the NAO has continued to respond to community needs throughout the country, particularly in the separate but closely interrelated areas of education, agriculture and social protection.  NAO is governed by a board of directors/trustees (BoD) coming from diverse background, their major responsibilities include ensuring the effective implementation programs, overseeing the audit process, developing conflict of interest protocols, reviewing budgets, monitoring performance and assuring compliance with applicable laws. The executive director leads a highly-qualified team to manage NAO’s activities based on annual work plans and budgets consistent with the organization’s mission and objectives.

OUR VALUES

GOALS

NAO has four strategic goals which will constitute NAO’s strategic direction over the next five years (2022-2026).  Each is supported by numerous strategic objectives and activities designed to move the organization further in the direction of each goal.  These goals in the areas of:

To provide effective basic programs to reduce illiteracy and encourage learning in the community.

To have sustainable programmatic agriculture, animal husbandry and poultry at community level, to eliminate the hunger and food poverty and enhance natural quality and natural resources.

To strengthening the community by bringing peace, stability and humanitarian right and income generation.

Board of Directors

NAO is governed by a board of directors coming from diverse background including educators, natural resources management, agronomist, civil society activists and companies’ executives. Board members are selected based on their skill sets with respect to NGO management, program implementation, income generation and gender issues and natural resource management among other things. These skills are instrumental in helping board members to fulfill their responsibilities and make meaningful contributions to NAO’s growth and expansion.  The major responsibilities of BoD include ensuring that internal controls are implemented effectively and efficiently, overseeing the audit process, developing conflict of interest protocols, reviewing budgets, monitoring performance and assuring compliance with applicable government and NGO’s laws

Paid and nonpaid (volunteers) staff

NAO currently employs total 44 (15 paid and 24 non-paid (volunteers) individuals, which are based in its head office in Kabul and targeted provinces. NAO is structured to implement multiple projects simultaneously both in the capital and throughout the country. Each province is served by a provincial coordinator or provincial focal point with regional coordinators directly accountable to our Program Department which are being manage from NAO head office. NAO has five departments such as Program, HR & Administration, Procurement, Finance and M&E overseen by the Executive Director (ED).
